Aromatherapy

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts — made from the flowers, leaves, roots and bark of botanicals — and are one of the most widely used tools in everyday home wellness. Whether you're diffusing lavender before bed, adding a few drops to a bath, or using a roll-on blend for on-the-go calm, aromatherapy offers a sensory dimension to a wellness routine that supplements alone can't replicate.

This collection covers pure essential oils, pre-blended aromatherapy oils, diffusers and associated accessories from brands chosen for ingredient transparency and quality of sourcing.

Pure Essential Oils vs Blended Aromatherapy Oils

Pure essential oils contain a single botanical — 100% lavender, 100% peppermint, 100% eucalyptus. They give you full control over how you use and combine them, and are the preferred choice for those who want to tailor their aromatherapy practice.

Pre-blended aromatherapy oils combine several oils into a ready-made formula designed for a specific purpose — a sleep blend might combine lavender, chamomile and frankincense; a focus blend might pair rosemary and peppermint. These are a more convenient starting point for beginners or those who prefer a curated option.

One important distinction: pure essential oils are not the same as fragrance oils. Fragrance oils are synthetic scent compounds designed to mimic a smell. For aromatherapy purposes, always look for products that clearly state "100% pure essential oil" rather than "fragrance oil" or "perfume oil."

A Quick Note on Safe Use

Essential oils are highly concentrated and should not be applied directly to skin without diluting in a carrier oil (such as sweet almond, jojoba or coconut oil) first. For diffusion, three to five drops in a water-based diffuser is a typical starting point. The FAQs below cover safe usage, dilution and choosing by purpose in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lavender is the most widely used essential oil for sleep in the UK and the most researched. Its calming, floral scent is well suited to diffusing in a bedroom 30–60 minutes before sleep, or adding a couple of drops to a pillow spray or warm bath. For a more targeted effect, look for pre-blended sleep formulas that pair lavender with chamomile, frankincense or cedarwood — these combinations are commonly found in purpose-made evening blends.

How to use for sleep:

  • Diffuser — three to five drops in a water-based diffuser; run for 30–60 minutes before bed rather than all night
  • Bath — two to four drops mixed into a tablespoon of carrier oil or bath salts before adding to warm water; never add neat oil directly to bathwater as it won't disperse properly
  • Pillow or room spray — pre-made sprays are the most convenient option if you don't want to mix your own

If you find lavender too floral, cedarwood or vetiver are earthier, warmer alternatives with a similar calming character.

No — and this is the most important safety point in aromatherapy. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts and applying them neat to skin can cause irritation, chemical burns or long-term sensitisation, where your skin develops a permanent reaction to that botanical.

To use an essential oil topically, it must first be diluted in a carrier oil — sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil and grapeseed oil are all commonly used. The standard dilution for adult use is approximately 2% — that's roughly two drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil.

A few practical points:

  • Always do a patch test on a small area of skin before applying more widely
  • Some oils — particularly citrus oils like lemon, bergamot and grapefruit — are photosensitive and should not be applied before sun exposure
  • Tea tree and peppermint are among the more potent oils and warrant a lower starting dilution, particularly for sensitive skin
  • Children and pregnant women should seek specific guidance before using essential oils topically

It matters significantly, and the distinction is frequently obscured on product labels.

Pure essential oils are extracted directly from plants — through steam distillation, cold pressing or solvent extraction — and contain the naturally occurring chemical compounds of that botanical. They are the appropriate choice for aromatherapy use.

Fragrance oils are synthetic or semi-synthetic scent compounds created in a laboratory to replicate a particular smell. They are widely used in candles, reed diffusers and room sprays, and are not the same as pure essential oils even if they smell very similar.

How to tell the difference:

  • Pure essential oils always state "100% pure essential oil" and list a specific botanical name
  • Fragrance oils are typically labelled "fragrance oil", "perfume oil" or simply list "fragrance" as an ingredient
  • Price is also a signal — a very cheap bottle of "rose essential oil" is almost certainly a fragrance oil, as genuine rose absolute is one of the most expensive botanicals to produce

For home fragrance purposes only, fragrance oils are fine. For therapeutic aromatherapy use — diffusing for sleep, stress or wellbeing — pure essential oils are the appropriate choice.

Most single pure essential oils and pre-blended aromatherapy oils work well in a standard water-based ultrasonic diffuser. The most popular choices for diffusion are:

  • Lavender — calm and sleep support; suitable for bedrooms and living spaces
  • Peppermint — refreshing and uplifting; popular for home offices and daytime use
  • Eucalyptus — fresh, cleansing scent; commonly used in bathrooms or when feeling under the weather
  • Rosemary — traditionally associated with focus and mental clarity; good for workspaces
  • Frankincense — warm, grounding; popular in meditation or evening relaxation contexts

Dosing guide for a standard 100–200ml diffuser:

  • Three to five drops is the typical starting point
  • More drops does not mean a stronger effect — essential oils are volatile and a room can quickly become overwhelming if over-dosed
  • Run the diffuser in 30–60 minute intervals rather than continuously, particularly in smaller rooms

Check your diffuser's instructions for its specific water capacity, as larger models may accommodate a few more drops.

The most practical starting point is a lavender essential oil and a basic ultrasonic diffuser. This combination covers the most common use case — creating a calming atmosphere at home — at a reasonable entry price, and gives you a foundation to build from.

From there, the most useful oils to add are:

  • Peppermint — versatile, widely used, strong contrast to lavender's floral character
  • Tea tree — practical for home and skin use; one of the most multi-purpose oils available
  • Eucalyptus — useful year-round for fresh, clean-air diffusion

A few things to look for when buying your first oils:

  • "100% pure essential oil" stated clearly on the label — not "fragrance oil" or "aromatherapy oil blend" with synthetic components
  • The botanical Latin name listed (e.g. Lavandula angustifolia for lavender) — a quality signal
  • A clearly stated country of origin — better quality brands are transparent about sourcing

Pre-blended oils labelled for a specific purpose (sleep, focus, calm) are also a good beginner option if you'd prefer not to select individual oils separately.

Excellent in every way.

I do recommend this company. I ordered from Greece, the VAT was correctly applied, and customs form correctly filled in, so had nil delays at customs. The bottles were very well packed and most of all the vitamins had expiry dates to November 2028, which I do appreciate, as I was stocking up. It is a pleasure dealing with caring professionals such as yourselves.
