"The Mother" is one of the most searched ACV terms in the UK — and most retailer pages mention it without explaining what it actually is.

The Mother is the naturally occurring colony of proteins, enzymes and bacteria that forms during ACV fermentation. It gives raw, unfiltered ACV its cloudy, murky appearance and the sediment you sometimes see at the bottom of the bottle. Filtered ACV has had this removed and is typically used in cooking rather than as a supplement.

For daily wellness use, products that state "with the Mother" are the less-processed option. If this is important to you, check for it specifically — not all capsule and gummy products retain it, and it's not always obvious from the front of the pack.

What to look for:

• "With the Mother" or "unfiltered" stated clearly on the label
• A cloudy appearance in liquid ACV (a good sign, not a quality issue)
• Capsule and gummy products that confirm the Mother is present in the formulation

An honest answer: the evidence base for ACV supplements generally is limited regardless of format, so this is largely a practical rather than a clinical question.

Gummies provide a standardised, pre-measured dose — typically 500–1000mg per serving — in a form that's far easier to take daily than liquid. The acidity concern with liquid ACV, which can affect tooth enamel over time, is removed entirely.

The main things to check with gummies:
