Brain Health & Mental Performance

Supporting mental performance day to day comes down to a few genuinely well-evidenced nutrients, alongside some traditional herbal options many customers ask for by name.

What's proven, and what's traditional:

  • DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid) has an authorised health claim for contributing to the maintenance of normal brain function, at an intake of 250mg per day — found in our fish oil and algae-based omega-3 products from brands like Lindens, Wiley's Finest and Together Health.
  • B vitamins, iodine and zinc also carry authorised claims relating to normal psychological function, cognitive function, or the nervous system, and are widely available across our vitamin and mineral range.
  • Ginkgo biloba and ginseng are popular, long-used traditional choices from brands including Solgar, Lamberts and HealthAid — we're upfront that neither currently holds an authorised UK/EU health claim, so we stock them because customers value the choice, not because we can promise a specific outcome.

Curious how these options compare, or which might suit your routine? Our FAQs below go into more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is worth being upfront about, since brain health is an area where marketing often runs ahead of the evidence. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil and algae-based supplements, has an authorised UK/EU health claim for contributing to the maintenance of normal brain function, at a daily intake of 250mg. Certain B vitamins(including B6, B12 and folate), along with iodine and zinc, also carry authorised claims relating to normal psychological function or cognitive function. By contrast, ginkgo biloba and ginseng— despite being some of the most searched "brain" ingredients — currently have no authorised health claim in the UK or EU; regulators have not approved specific cognitive claims for either. We stock all of these because customers value having the choice, but we think it's worth knowing which options are backed by an authorised claim and which are more traditional choices without that backing.

Neither currently has an authorised UK/EU health claim for focus, memory or cognitive performance, so we can't tell you one is clinically proven to outperform the other. What we can say is they're used differently in traditional practice: ginkgo bilobais typically taken with a specific focus on circulation and mental clarity in mind, while ginseng— particularly Korean/Panax varieties, which make up most of our range — is more commonly associated with general energy and vitality alongside any cognitive use. Some customers also choose combination products, like Vitabiotics Ultra Ginkgo & Ginseng or Red Kooga's combined formula, rather than picking one. If you're drawn to either, we'd suggest treating it as a personal, traditional choice rather than expecting a specific measurable outcome, and speaking to your GP first if you're on any medication, as both can interact with certain prescriptions including blood thinners.

If you'd rather not combine separate products yourself, Vitabiotics Neurozanis a dedicated, purpose-formulated brain and memory supplement combining several relevant nutrients in one product, and we also stock Brain Feed, a brand built specifically around cognitive and brain-focused formulations. These take the guesswork out of combining DHA, B vitamins and other nutrients individually. That said, a dedicated formula isn't automatically "better" than building your own combination from single-ingredient products — it mainly comes down to convenience versus control over individual nutrient amounts. If you already take a general multivitamin, it's worth checking for overlap before adding a dedicated brain-health formula on top.

It's worth setting realistic expectations here. Supplements in this category are generally intended to support normal brain function and psychological function as part of an already-balanced diet — not to deliver a noticeable, immediate boost in concentration the way caffeine might. If you're finding it hard to concentrate day-to-day, it's worth considering the basics first: sleep quality, hydration, and consistent meals all have a well-established impact on mental performance, often more so than any single supplement. Nutrients like DHA and B vitamins are best thought of as long-term nutritional support rather than a quick fix, and results (if any) tend to build gradually rather than appear overnight. If concentration difficulties are persistent or affecting daily life, that's worth raising with your GP rather than addressing through supplements alone.

Both provide DHA, the omega-3 most closely linked to normal brain function, so the choice usually comes down to personal preference rather than one being superior:

  • Fish oil (from brands like Lindens and Wiley's Finest) is the more established, widely available option, typically offering a range of DHA/EPA ratios and strengths.
  • Algae-based omega-3 (such as Together Health's Algae Omega 3) is a genuine choice for vegans and vegetarians, or anyone preferring a non-fish source, and provides DHA directly rather than relying on fish that have themselves accumulated it from algae.
If you're comparing products, check the actual DHA content per serving against the 250mg daily intake linked to the authorised brain-function claim, since products vary significantly in strength — a higher total fish oil dose doesn't always mean a higher DHA amount specifically.

Let’s Hear What Our Customers Have To Say

Product and price are both 5 star. Courier awful. Tracking less than useless but seriously, these items are fabulous. And this was definitely the best price I’ve seen. I’ll put up with the longer delivery time. It’s not the seller’s fault at all. I’m telling all my T2D friends about these. The only crisp type snack...

Serious Pig Snacking Cheese Classic 24g - 12 Pack

Good quality product, higher dha/epa than others, being in a foiled pouch helps keep fresh and doesn't allow light to oxidise as fast as clear packaging. Recommended.
