Condiments & Sauces

Our Condiments & Sauces range covers the everyday staples used in cooking and at the table — soy sauce and tamari, mayonnaise and mustard, pesto and tahini, plus stocks and gravies for finishing a dish. Many products across this range come in gluten-free, vegan or soy-free versions, worth checking if you're cooking around a dietary need.

Shop by Type

  • Sauces, ketchup & Worcester sauce — everyday pouring sauces and table condiments
  • Mayonnaise, mustard & dressings — for salads, sandwiches and marinades
  • Pesto, tahini & spreadable condiments — for pasta, dips and Middle Eastern cooking
  • Stocks, gravies & Asian condiments — soy sauce, tamari, miso and wasabi for cooking bases and stir-fries

Common Swaps Worth Knowing

  • Tamari is a naturally gluten-free alternative to standard soy sauce, with a similar flavour
  • Vegan mayonnaise is now widely available and performs the same way in most recipes
  • Seed-based alternatives to tahini exist if sesame is a concern alongside a nut allergy

Comparing tamari and soy sauce, or checking which mayo is genuinely vegan? Our FAQs below cover the detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Soy sauce and tamari look and taste similar, but there's one key difference that matters if you're avoiding gluten.

Soy sauce is traditionally brewed with both soybeans and wheat, which means most standard soy sauce contains gluten.

Tamari is made mainly or entirely from soybeans, with little or no wheat, making it a naturally gluten-free alternative in most cases — though it's still worth checking the label, since not every tamari is 100% wheat-free.

Flavour-wise, tamari tends to be slightly less salty and a little richer than standard soy sauce, which is why some cooks prefer it even without a gluten concern.

If you're cooking for someone with a gluten intolerance or coeliac disease, always check the specific product label rather than assuming "tamari" automatically means gluten-free — manufacturing processes vary between brands. For everyday cooking with no dietary restriction, the two are largely interchangeable in most recipes.

Not automatically — this catches a lot of people out. Standard mayonnaise is made with egg, so it isn't suitable for a vegan diet by default.

Vegan mayonnaise replaces egg with plant-based emulsifiers (often aquafaba, soy or pea protein) to achieve a similar texture and taste.

A few things worth checking before you buy:

  • The label should clearly state "vegan" rather than just "dairy-free," since dairy-free doesn't rule out egg
  • Texture and taste vary more between vegan mayo brands than between standard ones — worth trying a smaller jar first if you haven't used a particular brand before
  • Vegan mayo generally performs the same way in sandwiches, salads and dips, though it can behave slightly differently in recipes that rely on egg for setting

If you're cooking for a mixed household with different dietary needs, a good vegan mayonnaise is usually a safe default that both vegans and non-vegans are happy to use.

If sesame is a concern alongside or instead of a nut allergy, standard tahini is off the table, since it's made entirely from ground sesame seeds.

A few practical alternatives, depending on what you're making:

  • Sunflower seed butter works well in dips like hummus, giving a similar creamy texture with a milder flavour
  • Pumpkin seed butter is another seed-based option with a slightly earthier taste, better suited to dressings than plain dips
  • Plain unsweetened nut butter (if nuts aren't also a concern) can work in some sauces, though it changes the flavour more noticeably than a seed-based swap

None of these will taste identical to tahini — sesame has a distinctive flavour that's hard to fully replace — but they'll get you a similar consistency for hummus, dressings and sauces. Always check the product's allergen labelling directly rather than assuming a seed butter is automatically free from cross-contamination with nuts or sesame in production.

They do slightly different jobs, and whether you need both depends on what you're cooking.

Stock is a thin, savoury liquid used as a base for soups, risottos and casseroles — it adds background flavour rather than sitting on top of a finished dish.

Gravy is thicker and more concentrated, designed to be poured over a finished plate rather than cooked into a dish from the start.

In practice:

  • If you're making a soup, risotto or braise, you need stock
  • If you're finishing a roast dinner or a plate of mash, you need gravy
  • Some gravies are made using stock as a base, so they're related but not interchangeable in most recipes

Trying to use gravy where a recipe calls for stock usually makes a dish too thick and strongly flavoured, while using stock where gravy is needed leaves the dish too thin. It's worth keeping both in the cupboard if you cook a range of meals regularly.

Pesto varieties differ more than the jar labels always make clear, and the right one depends on what you're pairing it with.

  • Classic basil pesto — made with basil, pine nuts, garlic, parmesan and olive oil; the most versatile option for pasta, sandwiches and dressings
  • Sun-dried tomato pesto (pesto rosso) — richer and slightly sweeter, works well with heavier pasta shapes or spread on bread
  • Vegan pesto — replaces parmesan with a plant-based alternative or nutritional yeast; flavour is close to classic pesto but slightly less rich
  • Nut-free pesto — swaps pine nuts for seeds like sunflower or pumpkin, worth checking if you're cooking around a nut allergy

If you're new to pesto beyond the classic jar, sun-dried tomato is the easiest first alternative to try, since it works in most of the same recipes. Always check the label if you're avoiding dairy or nuts specifically, since "pesto" as a term covers products with very different ingredient lists.

Product and price are both 5 star. Courier awful. Tracking less than useless but seriously, these items are fabulous. And this was definitely the best price I’ve seen. I’ll put up with the longer delivery time. It’s not the seller’s fault at all. I’m telling all my T2D friends about these. The only crisp type snack...

Good quality product, higher dha/epa than others, being in a foiled pouch helps keep fresh and doesn't allow light to oxidise as fast as clear packaging. Recommended.
