Magnesium Supplements

Magnesium is one of the most popular mineral supplements in the UK and contributes to normal muscle function, normal psychological function, normal functioning of the nervous system, electrolyte balance, and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.

Although magnesium is naturally found in foods such as leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains, many people choose magnesium supplements as part of their daily wellness routine to help support their nutritional intake.

Our collection includes a wide range of magnesium supplements from trusted wellness brands, including capsules, tablets, powders, liquids and topical magnesium products. Whether you're looking for magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate, magnesium malate, magnesium threonate or broader mineral formulations, you'll find a variety of options to suit different preferences and lifestyles.

One of the biggest challenges when buying magnesium is understanding the differences between the various forms available. While all magnesium supplements provide magnesium, the form used, the amount of elemental magnesium per serving, and the product format can vary significantly between products.

Browse the collection below to compare ingredients, formats and strengths from leading wellness brands. If you're unsure which magnesium supplement is right for you, our Frequently Asked Questions further down the page answer some of the most common questions customers ask before making a purchase.

New to magnesium? Our magnesium supplements guide explains the different forms, how much elemental magnesium each one provides and how to compare products.

Frequently Asked Questions

The right form depends on what you're primarily looking for from a supplement.

Magnesium glycinate (also labelled as bisglycinate) is one of the most popular forms for everyday use and is often recommended as a starting point for many people. It combines magnesium with the amino acid glycine, is gentle on the stomach, and is well-tolerated at the doses needed to reach an effective daily intake. Because glycine is associated with calm and relaxation, glycinate is particularly popular for evening use and supporting sleep quality. It tends to cost more than other forms, but the tolerability advantage makes it the better long-term choice for most customers.

Magnesium citrate is well-absorbed, more cost-effective, and a solid general-purpose option. At higher doses it can have a loosening effect on the bowel, which is worth knowing before you buy — if you have a sensitive digestive system, glycinate or malate are safer starting points.

Magnesium malate is frequently chosen by those focused on daytime energy and active lifestyles, while magnesium threonate is a specialist premium option associated with cognitive support.

As a practical rule: glycinate for sleep and daily wellbeing, citrate for general top-up at lower cost, malate for energy and muscle recovery. Whichever form you choose, always compare elemental magnesium per serving rather than the headline compound weight.

This is the most common source of confusion when buying magnesium, and it's a legitimate one. Most products display the weight of the entire compound on the label — for example, "500mg magnesium glycinate" — but this is not the amount of magnesium your body receives. The useful figure is called the elemental magnesium content, and it is considerably lower than the compound weight.

The percentage varies by form. Magnesium glycinate contains approximately 14% elemental magnesium by weight, meaning a 500mg serving delivers roughly 70mg of elemental magnesium. Magnesium citrate is around 16%. Magnesium oxide sits higher at approximately 60% by weight, which is why it appears in many budget products — but its absorption rate is significantly lower than chelated forms, which largely offsets that advantage.

The NHS daily reference value for magnesium in adults is 270–300mg elemental. A well-formulated glycinate product delivering 200–250mg elemental magnesium per serving is a reasonable benchmark. Quality brands will state the elemental figure clearly on their supplement facts panel. If a product only shows the compound weight with no elemental breakdown, treat that as a transparency concern when comparing options.

There is no single best format — each has practical advantages depending on your routine and preferences.

Capsules and tablets are the most convenient option for most people. They are portable, provide a consistent serving size, and are easy to build into a daily habit. If simplicity and consistency matter most to you, capsules are usually the right choice.

Powders offer greater flexibility. You can adjust your dose more easily, which is useful if you're starting low and building up, and they can be mixed into water or a drink. Many magnesium powder products use citrate or malate as these dissolve well.

Topical magnesium — sprays, oils and flakes applied directly to the skin — is a separate category often used for localised muscle comfort after exercise. The evidence for significant systemic absorption via the skin compared to oral supplementation is limited, so for general nutritional support and meeting your daily intake, capsules or powders remain the primary choice.

The most important factor is choosing a format you will take consistently, alongside a product that provides a clear and adequate elemental magnesium dose from a reputable brand.

Magnesium is frequently considered alongside calcium and vitamin D because all three nutrients contribute to the maintenance of normal bones. Calcium contributes to normal muscle function and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, while vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus.

The magnesium and vitamin D relationship is worth noting specifically: vitamin D metabolism relies on magnesium, and some research suggests that low magnesium status may limit the body's ability to make full use of vitamin D supplementation. If you are taking vitamin D, it is worth ensuring your magnesium intake is also adequate.

Magnesium is also commonly taken alongside zinc and B vitamins within broader wellness routines. At standard supplement doses, combining these nutrients is generally well-tolerated. If you are taking multiple supplements, it is worth checking nutrient amounts across products to avoid unnecessary duplication. If you take prescription medication — particularly for heart conditions, kidneys or blood pressure — speak to your GP or pharmacist before adding magnesium supplementation.

This depends on your starting magnesium status and what you're looking to support. If your dietary intake has been consistently low, some people report improvements in sleep quality and muscle comfort within one to two weeks of starting a well-formulated glycinate or citrate supplement at an appropriate elemental dose.

For longer-term benefits — supporting normal energy metabolism, electrolyte balance and bone health — the effects are cumulative rather than immediate. Consistent daily intake over several weeks is more relevant than any short-term response.

The honest framing is: if your dietary intake is insufficient, supplementation can help restore adequate status over time. It is not a rapidly acting compound with acute effects, and anyone expecting overnight results may be comparing it unfairly against the wrong benchmark.

If you are unsure about your magnesium status or have specific health concerns, speak with your GP. Serum magnesium testing is available but has limitations, as most of the body's magnesium is stored in cells and bone rather than in the bloodstream.

Let’s Hear What Our Customers Have To Say

Product and price are both 5 star. Courier awful. Tracking less than useless but seriously, these items are fabulous. And this was definitely the best price I’ve seen. I’ll put up with the longer delivery time. It’s not the seller’s fault at all. I’m telling all my T2D friends about these. The only crisp type snack...
