It can interact with certain medications too, including sedatives, thyroid medication and immunosuppressants. None of this means ashwagandha is unsafe for everyone — millions of people take it without issue — but we think you deserve this information upfront rather than only positive marketing claims. If you have an existing health condition, take regular medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, please speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting ashwagandha.

Both come from the same plant, but they're prepared differently:

• Root extract (Solgar's formula) is a more traditional, whole-root preparation.
  
• KSM-66 (found in Dr. Vegan's formula) is a specific, patented extraction process that standardises the levels of withanolides, ashwagandha's key active compounds, so you get consistent levels from batch to batch.
  
• KSM-66 is the extract most commonly used in published clinical research, which is why it's often highlighted specifically on labels rather than just "ashwagandha extract."
  Neither is definitively "better" — root extract offers a more traditional, whole-herb approach, while KSM-66 offers standardisation and is the version most studied. If consistency and research backing matter most to you, KSM-66 is worth prioritising; if you prefer a more traditional preparation, root extract is a reasonable choice.

It's worth setting realistic expectations here, since ashwagandha isn't a fast-acting or immediate-effect supplement. It's generally taken as aconsistent daily supplement over several weeksrather than something you'd notice after one dose — most people who try it commit to at least 4-8 weeks before assessing whether it suits them. Because ashwagandha doesn't currently hold an authorised UK/EU health claim, we can't promise a specific timeline or outcome, but if you decide to try it, giving it a genuine, consistent trial period rather than stopping after a few days is the more informed approach. If you don't notice any difference after 8 weeks, it may simply not be the right fit for you, and that's a reasonable point to stop and reconsider.

This depends heavily on what else you're taking, so it's worth checking rather than assuming it's fine. Ashwagandha can interact withthyroid medication(it may affect thyroid hormone levels),sedatives or anti-anxiety medication(due to potential additive calming effects), andimmunosuppressants(as it may stimulate immune activity).
