Electrolytes & Hydration

Electrolytes are minerals including sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride. Our range includes electrolyte powders, tablets and sachets from trusted nutrition and hydration brands, with options to suit everyday, active and on-the-go routines.

Choosing an electrolyte format

Different formats suit different preferences:

  • Electrolyte powders – convenient for mixing into a bottle and regular use.
  • Effervescent tablets – compact and easy to add to water.
  • Single-serve sachets – pre-portioned and convenient for work, exercise or travel.
  • Tablets or capsules – an alternative to flavoured electrolyte drinks.

Compare the electrolyte blend

Formulations vary, so look beyond flavour and brand. Compare the electrolytes per serving, format and additional ingredients. Some products focus on sodium and potassium, while others include magnesium, calcium or chloride.

You may also find formulas containing carbohydrates, vitamins or caffeine, so consider which combination best fits what you're looking for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start with the actual electrolyte profile, rather than choosing purely by flavour, branding or the number of ingredients listed on the front of the pack.

Electrolyte products can contain different combinations of sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride and calcium, and the quantities can vary significantly between formulas.

When comparing products, look at:

  • Electrolytes per serving — check both which minerals are present and their amounts.

  • Serving size — two products can look similar until you compare the amount required for one serving.

  • Additional ingredients — some formulas contain vitamins, carbohydrates, caffeine or other ingredients.

  • Sugar and sweeteners — particularly when comparing drink powders.

  • Format — consider whether powders, effervescent tablets or sachets are most practical for you.

  • Number of servings — useful when comparing value rather than simply pack price.

More ingredients don't automatically make one electrolyte product better than another.

A relatively simple formula may suit someone specifically looking for an electrolyte product, whereas someone wanting a flavoured drink or additional ingredients may prefer a broader formulation.

The easiest comparison is therefore electrolyte composition + serving size + format + additional ingredients + cost per serving.

There isn't one format that's automatically better. The main difference is convenience, serving flexibility and how you prefer to consume the product.

Effervescent electrolyte tablets are particularly straightforward. Drop one into the recommended amount of water and allow it to dissolve. The tube is compact and avoids measuring powder, making tablets useful for work, gym bags and travel.

Electrolyte powders often come in larger tubs. They're useful if you regularly make electrolyte drinks and prefer measuring servings yourself. Always follow the manufacturer's serving instructions rather than assuming that a larger scoop provides a better result.

Individual sachets or sticks provide much of the convenience of tablets while retaining a powdered format. They're pre-portioned and easy to carry, although the cost per serving can sometimes be higher than buying a larger tub.

Your choice can therefore be practical:

  • Want minimal preparation? Consider effervescent tablets.

  • Regular home use? A powder tub may be convenient.

  • Want individually portioned servings? Consider sachets or sticks.

  • Don't want a flavoured drink? Look for conventional tablet or capsule formats where available.

Once you've chosen a format, compare the electrolyte content per serving.

They're all electrolytes, but they aren't interchangeable. That's why two products labelled "electrolytes" can have very different formulations.

Sodium is commonly one of the principal electrolytes in hydration formulations. However, the amount can vary substantially between products, so checking the nutrition information is more useful than simply checking whether sodium appears on the label.

Potassium is another important electrolyte. Potassium contributes to normal muscle function and the normal functioning of the nervous system, as well as helping maintain normal blood pressure.

Magnesium contributes to electrolyte balance, normal energy-yielding metabolism and normal muscle function. It can therefore appear alongside sodium and potassium in broader electrolyte blends.

You may also find:

  • Chloride, which contributes to normal digestion by production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

  • Calcium, which contributes to normal muscle function and normal energy-yielding metabolism.

Don't assume a product containing five different electrolytes is automatically preferable to one containing fewer.

Instead, compare which electrolytes are included, their quantities per serving and what else is present in the formula. This gives you a much more meaningful way of comparing products.

Not necessarily. Electrolyte products can be formulated very differently, so whether you choose one containing carbohydrates depends on the type of product you're looking for.

You'll encounter both low- or no-sugar electrolyte products and formulas that combine electrolytes with carbohydrates. Neither format should automatically be treated as the better option.

If you're primarily comparing electrolyte products for convenient everyday use, you may prefer a straightforward formula without substantial additional carbohydrate.

Sports-focused formulations may be different. Some combine carbohydrates and electrolytes within the same drink, while others allow you to obtain electrolytes separately from your sports nutrition.

When comparing the two, check:

  • carbohydrate and sugar per serving;

  • electrolyte amounts per serving;

  • recommended water volume;

  • serving instructions;

  • whether caffeine or vitamins are included;

  • whether you're already consuming other sports nutrition products.

This is particularly important when comparing products that look similar from the front of the packaging.

Think about the whole formulation, rather than judging the product by whether it contains sugar alone. The nutrition panel and ingredients list will tell you considerably more about what you're actually buying.

The pack price can be misleading because electrolyte products come in very different sizes and formats.

A £20 powder isn't necessarily more expensive than a £7 tube of tablets if the powder provides substantially more servings.

Start with cost per recommended serving.

For example, compare:

Pack price ÷ number of servings = approximate cost per serving

But price shouldn't be the only comparison. Two products offering 20 servings may provide very different electrolyte quantities and ingredients.

For a more useful comparison, check:

  • Number of servings

  • Cost per serving

  • Electrolytes provided per serving

  • Amount of sodium, potassium and magnesium

  • Additional vitamins or ingredients

  • Sugar/carbohydrate content

  • Format and convenience

Also check the manufacturer's serving directions carefully. A large tub can appear to provide excellent value until you realise the recommended serving is larger than expected.

Conversely, individually portioned sachets can cost more per serving but offer convenience and portability, which may be worthwhile if that's how you intend to use them.

The best-value product is therefore the one that provides the formulation and format you actually want at a sensible cost per serving, rather than simply the cheapest pack.

I m really happy with the Sanatogen High Protein Powder. I have been taking it for a few weeks in an attempt, alongside exercise to rebuild muscle loss after long-term illness. I particularly like that it is sugar and sweetener free. Easy to take with milk and yoghurt or mixed into cereal /soups / sauces

Good quality product, higher dha/epa than others, being in a foiled pouch helps keep fresh and doesn't allow light to oxidise as fast as clear packaging. Recommended.
