Vitamin D Supplements

Vitamin D is one of the most widely taken supplements in the UK. The NHS advises everyone to consider taking 10mcg (400 IU) daily during autumn and winter, when UK sunlight levels are too low to support meaningful vitamin D production in the skin. Certain groups — including people with darker skin tones, those over 65, and anyone who is housebound or covers most of their skin outdoors — are advised to supplement year-round.

This collection includes tablets, softgels, sprays and liquid drops, from everyday maintenance doses through to higher-strength formulations, including D3 + K2 combinations and vegan vitamin D3 options.

Vitamin D doses appear on labels in two ways. Understanding the Label — IU vs mcg. Both refer to the same thing:

  • 10mcg = 400 IU — the NHS daily reference amount
  • 25mcg = 1,000 IU — a common everyday maintenance dose
  • 50mcg = 2,000 IU — a widely used moderate-strength option
  • 100mcg = 4,000 IU — the NHS advises not to exceed this daily without medical guidance

Knowing this conversion makes comparing products straightforward, whether a label shows mcg or IU.

For guidance on D3 vs D2, vegan options and the D3 + K2 combination, see the FAQs below.

Frequently Asked Questions

The NHS recommendation of 10mcg (400 IU) daily is a public health baseline — the amount calculated to reduce the risk of deficiency in most of the general population during winter months. It is a starting point rather than a ceiling for everyone.

Many health professionals suggest higher daily intakes are appropriate for certain groups:

  • Adults with limited sun exposure throughout the year
  • People with darker skin tones, which requires more sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D
  • Those over 65, as the skin becomes less efficient at producing vitamin D with age
  • Anyone with a diagnosed or suspected deficiency

For most healthy UK adults supplementing during autumn and winter, a product in the 1,000–2,000 IU (25–50mcg) range is a common everyday choice — above the NHS baseline but well within the level the NHS advises not to exceed without medical guidance (100mcg / 4,000 IU per day). Products above that threshold should only be taken on medical advice.

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form naturally produced in human skin from sunlight. It is commonly preferred over D2 because it is generally more effective at raising and maintaining blood vitamin D levels, and remains active in the body for longer. The majority of vitamin D supplements available in the UK use D3 for this reason.

Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is plant-derived and was historically the standard option for vegans. However, lichen-derived vitamin D3 is now widely available and offers the same practical advantages as standard D3 in a fully vegan formulation — making it the more practical choice for most vegans compared to D2.

Standard vitamin D3 is typically derived from lanolin, a byproduct of sheep's wool. If you follow a vegan diet, look for a product clearly labelled "suitable for vegans" alongside "vitamin D3" — this confirms lichen-derived D3 rather than lanolin-derived. A product labelled only as "vitamin D3" without a vegan claim should be assumed to be lanolin-derived.

Yes — vitamin D is fat-soluble, meaning it absorbs more effectively when taken with a meal containing some fat. Taking it on an empty stomach or with a fat-free meal may reduce absorption.

In practice this doesn't require a large or particularly fatty meal. A normal lunch or dinner is sufficient, as is breakfast if it includes any fat at all — eggs, avocado, full-fat dairy, nuts or seeds all work well.

Beyond that, timing is largely personal preference. There is no strong evidence that morning versus evening makes a meaningful difference for most people. Consistency matters more than timing — choose a time that fits your daily routine and is easy to maintain, since regular daily supplementation over weeks and months is what actually builds and maintains vitamin D status.

If you are also taking magnesium or a D3 + K2 combination, taking everything together at a meal is the simplest approach.

D3 + K2 combination supplements pair two nutrients with a logical nutritional rationale behind them. Vitamin D3 supports the absorption of calcium. Vitamin K2 — specifically the MK-7 form — helps direct that calcium toward bones and teeth rather than other soft tissues. The combination is particularly popular among those supplementing at higher D3 doses or those specifically focused on long-term bone health.

The combination tends to suit:

  • Those taking 2,000 IU and above who want to ensure calcium is being directed effectively
  • Anyone focused on bone density alongside general vitamin D support
  • Those who prefer a single product rather than separate supplements

Standalone D3 is likely sufficient if:

  • You are supplementing at a standard maintenance dose of 400–1,000 IU
  • You already get adequate vitamin K through diet (dark leafy greens, fermented foods)
  • You are already taking vitamin K2 separately

Almost certainly yes, if you live in the UK — and this is one of the most common misconceptions about vitamin D.

Even with regular summer sun exposure, vitamin D stored in the body typically depletes by October or November for most UK adults. From roughly October through to March or April, UK sunlight is too weak to trigger meaningful vitamin D production in the skin regardless of how much time you spend outside.

Summer sun contributes to vitamin D status, but it does not reliably carry most people through winter without supplementation. This is why the NHS recommendation applies to the general population, not just those who avoid the sun.

The groups for whom year-round supplementation is specifically recommended include people with darker skin tones, those over 65, anyone housebound or who regularly covers their skin outdoors, and those with consistently limited sun exposure even in summer months.

Excellent in every way.

I do recommend this company. I ordered from Greece, the VAT was correctly applied, and customs form correctly filled in, so had nil delays at customs. The bottles were very well packed and most of all the vitamins had expiry dates to November 2028, which I do appreciate, as I was stocking up. It is a pleasure dealing with caring professionals such as yourselves.
