What's the difference between UMF and MGO grading?

UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) and MGO (methylglyoxal) are two different systems used to grade the strength of Manuka honey, and 1839 labels its jars with one or the other depending on the product.

UMF is an independently licensed grading system that reflects several markers of authenticity and potency together. MGO measures one specific compound (methylglyoxal) directly in mg/kg.

Neither is "better" -- they're just different scales, so it's worth checking which one is on the jar you're comparing rather than assuming the numbers mean the same thing across brands.

Which grade should I choose if I'm new to Manuka honey?

If you're trying Manuka honey for the first time, a lower grading such as UMF 7+ or 10+ is a reasonable starting point -- it has the characteristic Manuka flavour and properties at a more accessible price point than the higher grades.

Higher gradings like UMF 20+ or 22+, and MGO 40+, cost more because they're rarer and more concentrated, and tend to appeal to people who already use Manuka honey regularly and want a stronger jar.

There's no single "correct" grade -- it comes down to budget and how established your Manuka honey habit already is.

Jar or pouch -- which format should I buy?

1839's 250g glass jars are the standard format and suit a spoon straight from the jar. The 400g pouches hold more honey for the price and reseal easily, which some customers prefer for kitchen use where the honey gets used up quickly.

Is 1839 honey suitable for everyday use, not just as a treatment?

Yes -- Manuka honey can be used just like any other honey, stirred into tea, spread on toast, or eaten straight from a spoon, in addition to however else you choose to use it.

How should I store Manuka honey to keep its quality?

Store it at room temperature, out of direct sunlight, with the lid sealed tightly between uses. Honey doesn't need refrigeration and, kept properly, has a long shelf life.
