Allinson

Q: What's the difference between dried yeast and easy bake yeast?

Dried yeast (Allinson's 125g pack) traditionally needs activating in warm water before adding to your other ingredients, giving you visible confirmation that it's active before you commit the rest of your ingredients. Easy bake yeast (sold as a 100g tin or 7g sachets) is designed to be added directly to your dry ingredients without a separate activation step, which is quicker but relies on the yeast being fresh and your recipe being suited to this method. If your recipe specifies one type, it's worth sticking to that rather than substituting, since the method and sometimes the quantity used can differ between the two.

Allinson is a well-known UK baking brand, and we stock its yeast range for home bread-making, in a choice of dried yeast or easy bake formats.

What we stock: Allinson Dried Yeast (125g), Easy Bake Yeast Tin (100g), and Easy Bake Yeast in 7g sachets (6-pack).

Whichever format you choose, follow your recipe's guidance on quantity and activation method, since dried and easy bake yeasts aren't always used in exactly the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between dried yeast and easy bake yeast?

Dried yeast (Allinson's 125g pack) traditionally needs activating in warm water before adding to your other ingredients, giving you visible confirmation that it's active before you commit the rest of your ingredients.

Easy bake yeast (sold as a 100g tin or 7g sachets) is designed to be added directly to your dry ingredients without a separate activation step, which is quicker but relies on the yeast being fresh and your recipe being suited to this method.

If your recipe specifies one type, it's worth sticking to that rather than substituting, since the method and sometimes the quantity used can differ between the two.

Which format should I buy -- the tin or the sachets?

The 100g tin suits regular bakers who go through yeast often and want to measure out what they need each time. The 7g sachets are pre-measured and convenient if you bake occasionally and don't want an opened tin sitting in the cupboard.

How should Allinson yeast be stored?

Store in a cool, dry place as directed on the pack, and reseal tightly after opening. Check the use-by date, since yeast loses effectiveness over time once opened.

Can I substitute dried yeast for easy bake yeast in a recipe?

This depends on the recipe -- some recipes are written specifically for one type. If you're unsure, check general baking guidance on converting between yeast types before substituting.

Is Allinson yeast suitable for bread machines?

Many easy bake yeasts are suited to bread machine use, but check your bread machine's manual and the specific recipe you're following to confirm which yeast type and quantity it calls for.

Let’s Hear What Our Customers Have To Say

Product and price are both 5 star. Courier awful. Tracking less than useless but seriously, these items are fabulous. And this was definitely the best price I’ve seen. I’ll put up with the longer delivery time. It’s not the seller’s fault at all. I’m telling all my T2D friends about these. The only crisp type snack...

Good quality product, higher dha/epa than others, being in a foiled pouch helps keep fresh and doesn't allow light to oxidise as fast as clear packaging. Recommended.
